European Christmas Markets

There’s nothing like a Christmas Market to get you feeling festive. But if you want to travel further than your local market this Christmas, why not treat yourself by travelling Europe and going to the best Christmas markets? Here are 10 of the best Christmas markets that can be found across Europe this year.

1. Cologne, Germany

One of the most famous and well-known destinations when it comes to Christmas markets is Cologne in Germany. Cologne offers several iconic markets in December, although the one found in front of the city’s cathedral is arguably the most picturesque due to its holy backdrop.

Just a stone’s throw from the markets you’ll find an outdoor ice rink which is the perfect festive activity before or after browsing the wide array of market stalls.

2. Salzburg, Austria

Salzburg in Austria offers one of the prettiest locations for a Christmas market. Although the market itself isn’t the biggest, what it lacks in size it makes up for in festiveness. If you’re visiting Salzburg in December, you can expect to be joined by snow and frost, adding to the Christmas cheer and festive feeling throughout the city.

The snow-covered mountains in the distance provide the perfect background for a wander around Salzburg’s markets. The beautiful scenery and cosy vibe make the city a perfect destination for a romantic Christmas getaway.

3. Edinburgh, Scotland

Edinburgh is known for its scenic nature and ancient architecture, and the city’s Christmas markets follow suit. Between monuments and cathedrals, you’ll find fun for all the family as Edinburgh offers one of the most varied Christmas markets.

As a result, Edinburgh is a great Christmas location if you’re attending as a family or looking to entertain children of different ages. Aside from the stalls, popular attractions include an ice bar, amusement rides and a Christmas tree maze.

4. Vienna, Austria

Despite having a population of less than 10 million people, Austria appears twice on this list. Rivalling Salzburg’s beauty is the nation’s capital, Vienna. As you’d expect, Vienna’s markets are larger than what you’d find in Salzburg and the city itself also has far more things to do.

In terms of the markets, you’ll find an array of food, crafts and gifts. The most famous of Vienna’s markets is the Christkindlmarkt while other options include the markets found by Schönbrunn and Belvedere Palaces.

5. London, England

There are a whole host of Christmas markets in London. From the small, local markets made up of independent traders to the jaw-dropping offering found in London’s Hyde Park.

If you’re okay with large crowds, Hyde Park is where you’ll find the most fun in the form of London’s Winter Wonderland. Between November 21st and January 5th, you’ll find live music, fairground rides, ice skating and so much more.

6. Gdansk, Poland

Gdansk is at the top of most people’s lists when it comes to European Christmas markets, and with good reason. The city itself boasts an array of history and culture, but it certainly goes up a notch during the Christmas period.

If you’re looking for a lively market, Gdansk is a great option. Daily themes include karaoke nights while live DJs also help to create a buzzing atmosphere. If travelling with children, you’ll also find a variety of workshops to keep younger visitors entertained.

7. Geneva, Switzerland

Whether it’s due to the snow-covered Alps or the nation’s high reputation for producing tasty delicacies, Switzerland just naturally feels Christmassy. So it’s only right that our top 10 features a Swiss market.

Geneva offers one of the most wholesome settings in Europe during the festive season. Expect to find an endless choice of mulled wine, baked goods and sweet treats inside the cosy market huts.

8. Brussels, Belgium

Winter Wonders is Belgium’s biggest Christmas market and is a great choice if you are looking for a combination of enticing stalls and strong photo opportunities.

The city’s main plaza, Grand-Place, is stunning at the best of times. But in November and December, Brussels’ crown jewel comes alive with a stunning display of lights and fun-filled attractions.

9. Manchester, England

While London gains a lot of attention when it comes to England’s Christmas markets, don’t discount Manchester’s offering. Manchester’s markets feature 200 stalls across nine locations, but the city’s smaller size makes it easier to travel between markets.

Piccadilly Gardens offers the main spot for Manchester’s markets, but other locations will offer a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere. Foodies in particular will be fans of Manchester’s delicious offerings.

10. Monaco, France

For a slightly different vibe, Monaco’s Christmas markets offer a touch of luxury to go with slightly warmer temperatures compared to what is found elsewhere in Europe.

Stalls feature all your festive favorites such as culinary delights and handmade gifts, but you can also expect to pick up more expensive gifts including luxury Christmas baubles for your Christmas tree.
